Overland Expo SoCal Spotlight: Mylo Fowler

National Geographic photographer, storyteller, humanitarian

Photo by Mylo Fowler

You may already be familiar with National Geographic photographer and contributor Mylo Fowler, as he was the subject of Chris Burkard’s film “MYLO,” which has been viewed nearly one million times on YouTube alone. Overland Expo is thrilled to announce that Mylo will be joining us at Overland Expo SoCal, where he will be giving a presentation called “The Art of Storytelling with National Geographic Photographer, Mylo Fowler” and sharing his new film, “Savoring Joy.”

In addition to being his profession, Mylo’s photography has also aided his extensive humanitarian work. He is well-known for helping those who don’t have electricity or running water and has inspired many to make an impact in their own communities. Using social media, he helps many understand current issues across Indigenous communities. With his non-profit, they will power over 300 more homes in 2025 using solar kits!

His next adventure (which has been a dream of his since childhood) is driving to Alaska and returning a month later. While he loves to explore with his Rivian R1T, Mylo says he is happiest with his wife, Lauren, son, Denali, and daughter, Aurora Winter (a.k.a. Bubblegum). Check out Mylo’s website to see more of his stunning photography. To learn more about Mylo’s humanitarian work, visit Heart of America. And you can follow Mylo on Instagram at @NavajoMylo.

Get to know a little more about the artist, adventurer, and humanitarian, then stop by the Overland Essentials Area, sponsored by Torque Tyres, to learn about the Art of Storytelling, and the Oasis Bar and Food Court, sponsored by Nokian Tyres, to watch “Art of Joy” and ask Mylo questions during the Q&A.

Tell us about your rig(s):

I’ve had our Rivian R1T for almost two years now and we’re creeping over 100k miles! I drive it every day and still use it for my photography assignments and family trips. I have two sets of wheels and tires, plus the new Thule Caprock platform over the cab and bed that holds my Thule Approach Roof Top Tent. Packed with extra storage and recovery gear in my Pelican boxes, my gear tunnel holds my Pro Eagle Offroad Jack and any gear needed. With the range in mind, my route planning has increased tremendously! It’s crazy to know the R1T has twice the hp and torque as my last overland build!

All-time favorite campsite?

I just camped this winter in and around Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in my roof top tent. Some nights got down to -28°! Those trips are now on my YouTube/@offroadmylo

What’s your go-to overlanding meal?

I love eating Peak Refuel when I have little to no time to eat. When I can prepare a meal, I enjoy making the ultimate breakfast which is two scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, green onions, a pinch of salt, turkey bacon, and two Kodiak Pancakes topped with strawberries, bananas, and blueberries with a tall glass of orange juice. I have to have a big breakfast and snack on sugar snap peas, mini peppers, cucumbers and almonds throughout the day. I’m trying to commute a little better!

Best silver-lining story?

As a kid, my father taught me to go prepared and to have what I needed so I didn’t get caught off-guard. Having everything I need, I’m so grateful to always have my Factor55 recovery gear to help people. When there’s a winter storm or blizzard, the last place I want to be is on my couch. I’ve even woken up at 2am to head out. Doing so, I came across two stranded grandma’s trying to get home to Idaho. That was one of my favorite uses of the tow straps ever!

What is an area of overland travel that you think you have nailed? And what is an area of overland travel that you feel you could use some improvement in?

I feel I’ve nailed a few things, however continuing to learn and improve is always my goal. The thing I’ve nailed is the desire to help people whether the cameras are rolling or not — simply helping people is my goal. I’d love to learn more about route planning with map services and to better understand the use of plants in nature.
