Cascadia 4×4 — The Flipster V3
The story of the Cascadia 4×4 Flipster dates back to the early 2010s in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Tom Dyakowski and Dave Loretto, two geologists with a shared passion for off-roading, had spent a considerable amount of time and money outfitting their Jeeps to withstand the challenges presented in the British Columbia wilderness. That outfitting included, amongst other things, installing winches on the front of their vehicles. Unfortunately, that meant resorting to relocating their front license plates by means of crudely attaching them to their bumpers with zip-ties. A quick and dirty solution on otherwise highly engineered off-road machines. Built JK and LJ Wranglers with mud tires, high-end suspension systems, winches, and, that’s right, zip-tied license plates. Something wasn’t right with this picture.
Tom and Dave, who had started Cascadia 4×4 together a few years earlier, were both struck by the fact that no high-quality solution existed to this winch-license plate problem. They asked themselves: “Where does one mount their license plate in a visible and legal location without detracting from the aesthetics of their off-road rig?”.
“How about a metal bracket system that allows the license plate to flip up when using the winch and to flip down when finished?” they pondered. A quick Google search turned up nothing, and the concept for the Flipster was born.
Incidentally, Tom Dyakowski was fresh out of the mechanical design program at BCIT and eager to cut his teeth. After countless prototypes consisting of different shapes, materials, hardware types, and manufacturing techniques were tested over the next year, the Flipster V1 concept finally came to life. Officially launched in 2014, the Flipster was welcomed by hardcore wheelers, rock crawlers, and overlanders alike.
The Flipster saw subsequent development in 2016 with the release of the Flipster V2 and in 2021 with the Flipster V3 (current model). The Flipster V3 features a 4mm thick 5052 aluminum construction, textured black powder coating, and stainless-steel hardware. The pièce de resistance is the zinc-alloy torque hinge, which allows the license plate to be held in any position, day in and day out, and provides a minimum of 20,000 usage cycles with zero backlash. Each Flipster V3 also includes a CNC-machined aluminum spacer block that makes it compatible with both hawse and roller fairleads.
With the Flipster, Cascadia 4×4 went the extra mile to produce a simple, effective, and extremely high-quality product that compliments the vehicle it’s attached to. After-all, there’s a reason the auto-manufacturers of old put so much emphasis on beautiful and elaborate hood ornaments: it was the first thing people saw when they approached the vehicle and it left a lasting impression. In a few ways, the Flipster can be thought of as the modern-day equivalent to Rolls-Royce’s “Spirit of Ecstasy”. Just this time, she’s a flipping overlander.

FunTreks — Guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails, 3rd Edition
Arizona is home to some of the best trails, stretching from the north rim of the Grand Canyon to the southern border with Mexico. For those new to off-roading, it’s essential to understand that not every 4-wheel-drive road is enjoyable. Some trails can be long and monotonous, while others may be rough enough to detract from the experience. With three decades of backcountry exploration, the authors have identified the enjoyable trails and those to avoid. There are only 2 of them, unlike other trail resources that use crowd-sourcing techniques to collect information. FunTreks focuses on the best trails and produces the most accurate information in the market to date.
Combining several trails from this guidebook for overlanders can lead to an unforgettable journey. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced enthusiast, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
All trails in this book are organized by area on a map. Once you select an area, you’ll find a detailed map with key roads to each trail. You can then access specific trail pages, which provide detailed maps and essential information about each trail.
Trails are listed alphabetically and then also by difficulty. Each trail page includes a mileage log with turn-by-turn directions for the entire route, highlighted on the map. If you drive the trail in the opposite direction, you can use the reverse mileage indicated in brackets. GPS coordinates are also provided in the mileage log for easy reference on the map. To determine if your vehicle suits a particular trail, check the individual trail rating on its page. The photographs included on the trail pages are very helpful, particularly for the more challenging trails, where we often show a picture of the most difficult spot.

ICON Vehicle Dynamics — 2024 Tacoma Top Plate Reinforcement Kit
During initial durability testing of the new 4th Gen Toyota Tacoma, a potential weakness in the original equipment (OE) suspension was identified. Specifically, the front upper shock mount and shock stem bushing were found to be prone to failure under intense off-road use. To address this issue, ICON Vehicle Dynamics has developed the Top Plate Reinforcement Kit. Designed to support and reinforce the factory upper shock mount, the kit also ensures that the shock stem bushing is captured and retained in the event of failure. This upgrade is particularly recommended for 2024 Tacoma models that are subjected to heavy off-road driving with OE front coilover shocks.
Installation of the Top Plate Reinforcement is both quick and straightforward. There’s no need to jack up the vehicle or remove the tires, though tires were removed in the provided photos for clarity. Installation simply requires removing the three coilover top mount nuts, positioning the reinforcement plate, and re-torquing the nuts. The plate itself is CNC machined from durable 6061-T6 billet aluminum, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the Tacoma’s factory suspension performance.

The CDEV is an electronically controlled valve that regulates oil flow to adjust damping force as the shock is compressed. This infinitely variable valve responds in less than 40 milliseconds, making precise adjustments for changing terrain. CDEV’s hydraulic circuits are tailored to each application, providing the highest possible resolution and dynamic range specific to each vehicle.
A Seamless Interface
The IIC app integrates all this cutting-edge technology into a user-friendly platform. Through a Bluetooth connection, users can monitor, record, and adjust system performance with ease. The app allows adjustment of baseline firmness settings and sensitivity controls for vertical “G-Boost” and lateral “Corner Boost.” Pre-configured drive modes (Normal, Desert, and Haul) are available, but users can create an unlimited number of custom presets. Additionally, the app records trip data, including time, speed, distance, and G-Forces, offering users a comprehensive overview of their vehicle’s performance.
What Does This Mean?
The true advantage of the IIC and CDEV system is its ability to automatically adjust the shocks without requiring the driver to stop or take their eyes off the road. For instance, when driving at high speeds on a washboard road, the system increases damping to absorb larger obstacles as they appear. When the terrain smooths out, the system reduces damping to provide a more comfortable ride.
